Memphis

I have been without a car since we moved to California almost a year ago.  Originally, the project was an 11 month assignment for Steve and that seemed doable.  But when we found out that our stay  was extended, we knew it was time to get my car to L.A..   We thought we would ship it, but then realized that we would have enough time to drive it across the country when we went home for Christmas.  So on  December 30th, we left Troy, TN and began our cross country trip.  West Tennessee is so beautiful!

We had no plans to do any sight seeing in Memphis, but as we approached downtown we decided to exit and just go by a few sights.  Both of us grew up in Memphis -I moved away when I was in 7th grade, but returned after graduating from nursing school.  We met that year and lived in Memphis for the first year and a half of our marriage.

Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis are some who recorded here
Methodist Hospital- where Steve and I met over 33 years ago.  I was working as a graduate nurse on the same unit where Steve was working part-time as a ward clerk while he attended Memphis State.

Before we knew it we were in East Memphis-

Second Presbyterian Church- our church in 1981

After ordering two jumbo pulled pork sandwiches from Corky's, my sister called and she said that the best barbecue was Central BBQ.  So, we decided to do a taste test and ordered two more jumbo sandwiches fr their downtown location since we were heading that way anyway.

Where Steve earned his degree in electrical engineering

Where Martin Luther King was assassinated

The mighty Mississippi River

Two hours later and four jumbo pulled pork sandwiches in the car, we were back on the road heading west on I-40.  And by the way, I couldn't tell any difference with the two sandwiches.  Steve liked Central BBQ better.  In the five days that we were in West TN, Steve ate at 4 different BBQ places.  4th place- Damron's, 3rd place- Corky's, 2nd place- Central, and the winner . . .

Steve's souvenir when he went to visit his siblings earlier in the week!  By the way, did you know that scenes from Walk the Line were shot there?
